Bad Timing?

Just when we finally had ourselves convinced that it was safe to drive over the border, I see this on the Trip Advisor forum.  It's an article about a gun battle that took place on a main street in Rocky Point last week at 6 p.m. in the evening.

Here's a telling line from another online news source But until Thursday, the city had largely avoided the public gunfights that have afflicted many cities in Mexico's border region.

I'm not exactly an alarmist because we still travel to Mexico, but I think we'll hold off on our first drive trip south of the border to Puerto Penasco for now.  So unfortunate.

For now, we'll stick to safe harbor.

So sorry! I know we'd be doing the same thing...

Ann, I remember reading in the past that Puerto Penasco was considered to be overrun by the Sinaloa Cartel. I'd put it in the back of my mind, but that brings it to the forefront. Maybe we'll head to the mountains.

That is such bad news, but good you had some warning. My brother used to go to Rocky Point all the time, before it was ever developed. He's got great old photos of being on the beach, sleeping under his truck..nothing in sight. So sad now.
He's lived in San Diego & Mesa, & drove often over the border from both. Now is content to come to Isla!

Kris, we have friends who live in an isolated mountainous area down by the border and they keep their guns loaded because of drug runners coming through the area. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the cartel violence would go away so it would be safe all over Mexico again.
