I feel lucky. Watching the NBC Evening News last night, I was heartbroken.
The newly homeless.
Tent cities are growing in California and many cities around the U.S. Car plants in Japan are also laying off people who thought they had jobs for life, making people automatically homeless since housing comes with the job there. Some young couples there are giving up their children because they can't feed and shelter them.
I actually got a job yesterday. Full-time contract work for two months. Then perhaps an option for another project after that. I saw astounded looks on the faces of the group who were called in with me when the HR manager said to all of us -- We're happy to say you've been hired. It's almost impossible around here to get an interview, much less just be hired. It's seasonal employment, but I'll take it!
So next Monday morning, I'll be playing Dolly Parton's '9 to 5', only it'll actually be 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
But I'll be thinking of all those newly homeless people. And I'll feel lucky.

Great about the job, Becky!
Congratulations, Beck! I read that the bartender at Bull & Finch, the inspiration for Cheers, was laid off after 25 years. You know times are hard!
That's great news about the new job.
I was really surprised to see those tent cities myself. I remember back in the early 80's the oil bust in Oklahoma. It was horrible the number of people out of work.
If we are working we are lucky. And I keep telling myself that all the time.
Thanks all of you! Seattle had a tent city that was moved from one church ground to another, but I've heard it's grown by leaps and bounds. Pretty scary where our nation is headed!
Congrats on the job Beck!
Congrats, Becky! What will Saby do all day???
Congratulations, Beck. I know when I got the call from the university that I had been hired, I cried because it was such a relief. I was really worried about what was going to happen if I couldn't find a job. I am among the very fortunate ones, so I count my blessings every day.
Thanks Jeanie, Jana, and Deb! Jana, I also wonder what the heck Saby will do all day! I'll bet she'll give me the Stella Myrtle look when I leave! And Deb, it'll be a relief to be out of the house! But kind of nice that it's seasonal. :)
